Practice the Proper

To read about the place of the Proper in the liturgy of the Mass, click here.

At the 5:15 PM Sunday Mass at Mary Star of the Sea in San Pedro, CA, the schola sings these Proper every Sunday. Below are practice files. Review and join us in the loft at 4:45PM. If you can come earlier for a better “live” practice, text or call Hervé at 626-278 0786 before 2:00PM, to meet at 4:15PM in the chapel. Click on Books, books, books for details on the books used below.

To reconcile the universality of the Church (=Latin language) with our regional understanding of the Proper, we weave the English Proper by Fr Weber with those of the Roman Gradual. Thus, for the Introit, the Offertory and the Communion:
1 – we sing the antiphon in English
2- we sing the verse in English
3 – we sing the antiphon in Latin
4- … if time allows (ex: communion,…) then we continue by alternating Latin verses and Latin

Sunday April 28th Quasimodo Sunday, Sunday of Divine Mercy, (pages of the Gregorian Missal: GM Easter 2).

It used to be called Sunday “In Albis depositis” as it was the first day when the newly baptized on the Easter Vigil would finally remove the white albs they had received on their baptism. Hence the reference in the Introit to the “new born babes” (Geniti infantes). This period was called “Mystagogical Catechesis” (Katecheseis Mystagogikai ). See Pope Francis’s recent address for more about “Mystagogy”. It is also the Sunday when Christ tells Thomas to “believe”. Starting at the beginning of April, we will practice
