ST MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH – 672 Temple Ave LONG BEACH, CA 90814
The liturgical books for singing the Mass are called the Roman Missal and the Roman Gradual. These books differentiate three types of chant the Mass: the “Acclamations and dialogues” (ex: Greeting, Alleluia,..), the “Ordinary” (ex: Kyrie, Sanctus,..) and the “Proper”. The first two repeat often, so the congregation can easily join in singing them. They are the foundation of “active participation” at Mass.
The “Proper” consists of biblical texts sung at Entrance, between the readings, and during the Offertory and Communion processions. Their texts change at every mass. The proper can be done in a “responsorial” style so the congregation can participate as well.
