Excerpts from “The Mass and the Saints” (Thomas Crean, OP) about the Preface Dialogue

St Thomas Aquinas: “the priest greets the people seven times in the Mass, five when he turns to them, and twice without turning, namely during the Preface and when he says Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.  This denotes the sevenfold grace of the Holy Ghost.”

and also “Now the consecration of this sacrament is a work of supernatural power. So the people are first incited to devotion and admonished in the Preface to hold their hearts on high before our Lord.”
