Introduction

7:15AM Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman rite (1962 Missal)

Where? JP II Polish Center, 3999 Rose Dr Yorba Linda, CA 92886,

When? On the second and fourth Sundays of each Month (some exceptions, see details below).

To sing with our schola cantorum, join us at 6:40AM in practicing for the day’s mass, and see below what music to prepare for following weeks. We also sometimes practice during the week together.

The schola cantorum sings the proper: typically the Gradual and Alleluia from Chants Abreges and the Communion antiphon and verses from Communio. We use the website GABC Chant Tools to adjust the difficulty of the proper sung to our skills, which are hopefully growing. The schola also leads and supports the congregation in their singing (see here what parts the congregation sings). The “adult schola” (Romans 12:1 Schola) and the “children schola” (Jubilate Deo Schola) sometimes rehearse separately, as needed.

Prerequisites: 1- completing the 3-session “sight reading through Gregorian Chant“. Contact Herve at longbeachchant@live.com to know when the next class is scheduled. 2- be ready to spend two hours during the week before each mass to prepare singing the mass.

Most of the liturgical texts sung for the feast of Corpus Christi were written by ST THOMAS AQUINAS. Some of these texts became popular hymns. For example, “Panis Angelicus” and “O Salutaris Hostia” are texts extracted from longer hymns written by St Thomas for the Procession of Corpus Christi.

“Panis Angelicus” is part of “Sacris Solemnis” (p. 805 in the downloadable document above. Listen on video below)

“O Salutaris Hostia” is part of “Verbum Supernum” (p. 809 in the downloadable document above. Listen below)
