Hymns are typically syllabic*, which means that there is one note for each syllable of the text. All the hymn texts in this Book of Compline have 8 syllables per stanza, and there are 4 stanzas per verse of the hymn, which repeat four or five times. This is sometimes described as an 8.8.8.8. hymn. For compline, six different texts, three in Latin, and three in English, which all follow this 8.8.8.8 rhythm, are used.
